Signals and Copy Trading: What They Are and Where the Money Goes

Signals and copy trading both outsource decisions to someone else, but neither removes the risk from your money.

Updated Sep 2026 · how we rate brokers

What copy trading actually is, and what it is not

Copy trading links your account to another trader's account so that when they open or close a position, the same trade is placed on yours, usually in proportion to the balance you have funded. That is the whole mechanism. You are not buying a strategy, a guarantee, or a share of anyone's skill; you are renting someone else's timing.

A trading signal is a lighter version of the same idea. Someone posts a direction, a pair such as GBP/USD or EUR/USD, and entry and exit levels, and you decide whether to place the trade yourself. Signals leave execution and position sizing in your hands. Copy trading takes both out of your hands, which is convenient and also the main danger.

In Nigeria the practical friction sits at the funding stage. Retail forex brokers are not licensed for online FX dealing locally, so residents typically open accounts with offshore-regulated firms and move money by bank transfer, OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card or USSD. CBN rules govern that currency movement, so confirm what your bank or app allows before you commit funds.

The provider earns whether you do or not

Most signal channels and copy platforms charge a subscription, a performance fee, or both. That fee is deducted from your account or paid upfront regardless of the outcome of the trades. A provider with a thousand subscribers has a stable income even in a losing month, so the incentive to keep you subscribed is not the same as the incentive to trade well.

Be careful with track records. A screenshot of a winning BTC/USD signal tells you nothing about the twenty calls that came before it, the size of the positions, or whether the account survived the drawdown. Anyone can post the wins and delete the losses, and past results on a demo or a small account do not transfer to your balance.

Ask what happens to your money during a losing streak. If the answer is vague, or if the provider cannot explain how stop losses are set, treat that as the answer.

Copy trading magnifies whatever the lead trader does

When you copy, your risk is not just their risk. If they use heavy leverage, your account takes the same proportional hit, and a margin call can close your positions at the worst moment. Slippage matters too: your entry price will rarely match theirs exactly, especially during the London and New York overlap from 14:00 to 18:00 WAT, when spreads and volatility are at their widest.

Session timing is not a detail. Sydney runs 23:00 to 08:00 WAT, Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00, London 09:00 to 18:00, and New York 14:00 to 23:00. A signal issued during a thin session can behave very differently from the same signal in a liquid one, and you may be asleep when it needs managing.

There is also the question of who is on the other side. Some lead traders are paid by the platform for trading volume, not for profit. If your copy trades generate commissions for the broker, the volume itself is the product.

Check the register before you check the returns

SEC Nigeria publishes a register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng. Look up any firm claiming to offer investment services in Nigeria before you send money. If a name is not there, that tells you something useful, and if a firm claims a licence that is not on the list, treat that as a red flag.

For the broker itself, read the funding page and the withdrawal terms in full. Check the minimum, the processing time, and which payment methods are actually supported for Nigerian customers. Do this before you deposit, not after a withdrawal stalls.

No signal service or copy platform can remove currency risk, leverage risk, or the risk that the person you are copying stops being right. Treat any promise of steady income as a sales pitch, because that is what it is.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing more than you deposit. Most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
